Important Information About The Care Professional Register

The CPR is currently being updated to enable us to make improvements that will meet the requirements for Professional Standards Authority (PSA) accreditation.

Despite the CPR being a voluntary register, these updates are necessary to align CPR with mandatory registers in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The Care Professional Register

REGISTRATION

Following extensive consultation and research, NACAS has launched the Care Professionals Register (CPR) for social care workers in England.

As the Professional Body for Care Professionals, NACAS is leading the way with registration.

What is Registration?

The main purpose of registration is to protect the public as it ensures only those who are competent and properly trained can deliver care and support in roles where registration is required.

Being registered means you are part of a professional workforce and can show that you have skills and knowledge which are vital to providing good care and support to the people of England.

Professional Standards Authority Accreditation

Following extensive consultation and research, NACAS has launched the Care Professionals Register (CPR) for social care workers in England.

Developed in partnership with the Institute of Health & Social Care Management, the register provides a platform to recognise and uphold the professionalism of care workers across the sector.

By joining the register, care professionals commit to maintaining the highest standards of conduct, adhering to a Code of Conduct, and embodying the values expected within the profession.

The insights gained through the CPR will contribute to ongoing discussions about the future of professional registration in social care.

We encourage all care professionals in England to consider registering and demonstrating their dedication to excellence in care.

Professional Standards Authority Accreditation

The Professional Standards Authority (PSA) accreditation panel is currently reviewing our application for its Standard 1 (Public Interest) Assessment  If approved, this will mark a significant step forward for NACAS and care professionals across England.

Our team is working diligently to meet the PSA’s Public Interest Assessment criteria—laying the foundation for a credible and respected register for the social care sector.

What’s Next for the CPR?

When the Public Interest Assessment is met, the CPR will progress to the next stage:

Assessment against PSA Standards 2 to 9 for Accredited Registers. This process will further solidify the register’s role in supporting professional standards and public confidence in care.

The benefits of having a registered workforce

There are benefits to having a register of people who work in social care. They include:

Building trust and confidence

  • people can rely on registered social care workers
  • people have confidence knowing you follow the Code of Practice & Conduct.

Valuing social care workers

  • you can show you have the skills and knowledge to be a social care worker
  • you can show you're trained and take responsibility for developing knowledge and skills
  • employers can provide the support and development you need
  • knowing more about you will help plan ways to support you.

Making sure people are safe

  • protecting people’s rights and making sure they're listened to
  • supporting people to be independent and protect themselves
  • if a worker is not fit to practise, they can be removed from the Register. If they're removed, they will be unable to practice in England.
